“Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.”
— Arundhati Roy
My name is Hugh. My wife and I live in a 1950’s ranch house on half an acre in the Deep South. It is a strange fate to be a child of the Southland, and I inherited all of the curses and blessings that come with growing up here.
I believe in a better world. I think that world is possible. I dream about it. And I too, can hear her breathing. I once heard a man say that the best critique of the bad was the doing of the better. That thought has haunted me and held me ever since.
The world is a scary place right now. The urge to hide from it is almost irresistible. But what if we could create a life we don’t want to escape from? And what if we could work together to make sure everyone has the resources they need to do that?
If I were wealthy and in tech, we would call that “Lifestyle Design” and would have conferences and I would write a book and it would be awesome for a few privileged folks.
But I think we can build that life now, or at least move closer to it. We can build a good life. We can build a good world.
So, about this blog. It’s wide-ranging, but the central theme is how to build a good life. Or, at least how I am trying to do so. And I know a blog seems very last decade, but it’s just a technology that underlies the important thing – I will be writing regularly about how I am working to build a good life in my context, with the hope it enables others to do so in theirs.
So that’s the story – I am here in the Deep South, surrounded by both humidity and hope, and I intend to document what it looks like as I try to build a good life and a good world, or at least my part of it.
FAQ’s
What does Humidity and Hope mean, anyway? Why did you call the blog that?
I answer that here.
Do you mind if I share something you wrote on Facebook? Can I reprint one of your posts in my church newsletter?
Sure thing, with attribution. I have a page that gives guidelines for sharing and attribution here.
